Lodi Ethical Photography Festival

Festival della Fotografia Etica Lodi: access management and visitor flow analysis for a multi-venue cultural festival

The context

The Festival della Fotografia Etica in Lodi is one of the most important Italian events dedicated to photojournalism and social photography.

Founded in 2010 with the aim of bringing the general public closer to social and contemporary issues through photography, the Festival has grown over the years to become an international reference point for photographers, journalists, and photography enthusiasts.

Each edition offers a rich program of activities: photographic exhibitions, author talks, workshops, video screenings, book presentations, guided tours, creative workshops for children, and activities dedicated to schools and families.

One of the most anticipated highlights is the official World Press Photo exhibition, featuring more than 150 images from across the globe. The Festival represents the only stop in Lombardy for this prestigious exhibition.

The Festival takes place as a true city-wide cultural event: more than 20 photographic exhibitions are hosted in some of Lodi’s most evocative locations, including historic palaces, cloisters, squares, and cultural spaces.

A cultural format of great value, but also complex to manage from an organizational perspective.

What we implemented

For the Festival della Fotografia Etica, we structured a system capable of supporting the entire visitor journey, from ticket purchase to access to the individual exhibitions spread throughout the city.

The system made it possible to manage:

✔ sales of daily tickets, group tickets and festival passes
✔ management of the physical box office during the Festival weekends
✔ ticket validation at the entrance to the exhibition circuit
✔ access control also within the individual exhibition venues
✔ automated communications to visitors, including a WhatsApp welcome message
✔ statistical reporting tools for the organizers

The core of the project was the management of the Festival as a multi-venue system, allowing organizers to verify visitor access not only at the main entrance but also in each exhibition location.

Management of exhibition venues

Each ticket allows access to all Festival exhibitions but with a specific rule: entry to each venue is allowed only once.

The access control system therefore allowed the organizers to:

✔ verify visitor entry across different locations
✔ ensure compliance with the Festival’s access rules
✔ correctly manage the fiscal dimension of an event distributed across multiple venues
✔ monitor visitor flows throughout the city

This transformed the access system into a valuable tool not only for operational management but also for data analysis.

Reporting and audience analysis

Thanks to ticket validation in each exhibition venue, the organization was able to obtain valuable insights into the performance of the Festival.

In particular, it became possible to:

✔ identify which exhibitions attracted the highest number of visitors
✔ analyze visitor distribution across the different venues
✔ obtain statistical data useful for future editions
✔ monitor the overall performance of the Festival

The experience for visitors and organizers

For visitors, the system made access to the exhibitions simple and seamless, allowing them to explore all the Festival venues with a single ticket.

For the organizers, it significantly simplified operational management thanks to:

✔ a fast and intuitive box office system
✔ continuous support for both organizers and visitors
✔ clear and updated monitoring tools
✔ more efficient management of visitor flows across the Festival venues

The results

The digital access management system allowed the Festival della Fotografia Etica to efficiently coordinate a cultural event spread across numerous locations throughout the city.

In particular:

✔ the visitor experience became smoother
✔ access control became more accurate
✔ organizers gained better insights into visitor behavior
✔ the operational and fiscal management of the Festival was simplified

In a distributed cultural event like this, the access system became not only a tool for entry management, but also a valuable resource for understanding and improving the Festival experience.

A replicable model

The Festival della Fotografia Etica case demonstrates how digital access management can effectively support complex cultural events spread across multiple locations.

This approach can be replicated for:

✔ multi-venue cultural festivals
✔ exhibitions distributed across different locations
✔ city-wide events with a single access ticket
✔ organizations that want to transform access data into insights for future planning
